What are the Four Attachment Styles?

Our Attachment style is a form of connection that we view our friendships, family, and romantic relationships through and impacts us in a variety of areas of life. Attachment style is rooted in the experiences we have as children and adolescence and follows us into our adult lives. Let's take a look below at where we may fall. Please note that attachment can happen on a spectrum and we can all work towards a more secure form of attachment.

Secure Attachment Style: People with a secure attachment style feel comfortable with intimacy and can form close relationships. They are able to express their emotions and communicate their needs effectively. They trust others and feel secure in their relationships.

Avoidant Attachment Style: People with an avoidant attachment style tend to be emotionally distant and independent. They may avoid intimacy and have difficulty expressing their emotions. They may also feel uncomfortable with closeness and may have trust issues.

Anxious Attachment Style: People with an anxious attachment style crave intimacy and may be overly dependent on their partners. They may also have a fear of abandonment and may become anxious or upset when they perceive a threat to their relationship.

Disorganized Attachment Style: People with a disorganized attachment style may have a mix of anxious and avoidant behaviours. They may have difficulty regulating their emotions and may exhibit erratic or unpredictable behaviour in relationships. They may have experienced trauma or abuse in their past, which can impact their attachment style.
